Conclusion
This concludes your self-guided walk of Shollenberger Park. As you can see this land is rich in human and natural history and is a varied and valuable habitat for plant and animal life. As you now know, wetlands used to total hundreds of thousands of acres in California and now occur only sparcely. By getting to know a piece of land, it's inhabitants, and its history, hopefully you will develop a sense of stewardship for it. To save and protect our wetlands, or any habitat, we need to understand its value and recognize the effects our activities have on it. Please return to Shollenberger Park at different times of the day and year so you'll be able to experience more of its different moods and faces. A Teachers Guide to Shollenberger Park Human and Natural History, including species lists, is available from the City of Petaluma's Planning Department located at 11 English Street, Petaluma, CA.
